The UX Engineer will work with Product and Platform teams and other IT stakeholders to design and build technology solutions that add value to the business.

The UX Engineer will be responsible for supporting Engineers and Developers to ensure that software products and technology solutions are intuitive, easy to use and easy to maintain.

Within the Product & Platform model the UX Engineer will work throughout the entire lifecycle of a solution from design to support.

UX Engineers will typically adopt DLA’s preferred delivery methodology, Agile. However, they need to be flexible and adopt alternative methodologies where this is appropriate.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Conduct user research to understand user needs and behaviours
  • Design and develop user interfaces that are intuitive and easy to use
  • Collaborate with Engineers, Developers and Product and Platform teams to create functional and aesthetically pleasing products
  • Create wireframes, prototypes, and mock-ups to test and refine product design
  • Optimize web app performance by improving page load times and reducing website errors
  • Ensure web app accessibility for users with disabilities
  • Stay up to date with emerging trends and technologies in UX design and front-end development
  • Conduct usability testing to evaluate the effectiveness of product design
  • Analyse user feedback and behaviour data to continuously improve product design
  • Identify the common design patterns and components that can be used across different products or services
  • Develop a library of reusable components, including UI components, icons, and typography
  • Ensure that the components are well-documented and easy to use by other designers and developers
  • Implement the component library in a way that allows for easy integration with existing codebases
  • Test and refine the components to ensure that they meet the needs of different products and services
  • Collaborate with developers to ensure that the component library is flexible and can be customized as needed
  • Update the component library as needed to keep up with emerging trends and technologies

About you

  • A UX Engineer requires a combination of skills including strong problem-solving ability, creativity, attention to detail, and excellent communication skills. They must also have knowledge of user-centred design principles, web development, and programming languages like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
  • Communicate effectively with IT professionals and business colleagues
  • Excellent written skills
  • Ability to develop simple solutions to address complex problems
  • Creative with an ability to develop attractive, easy to use designs
  • A team player who collaborates well with others
  • Self motivated with an appetite to improve current solutions
