The role

THE OPPORTUNITY

This role is part of our central commercial research function at DLA Piper and can be based in any of our European offices. Led by the Head of Information and Research Services, our international team provides business research support to our offices across Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific.  The nature of the team's work is to provide value add commercial research services and products such as deep company profiles, sector reports and market models. 

This is an exciting position, as your work and your market expertise contribute to the firm’s deep understanding of our clients and the industries they are operating in, fueling the international success of DLA Piper. 

You will have significant autonomy to take personal responsibility and work under your own initiative to effectively deliver the research products and support needed.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

You will work closely with the research and knowledge team colleagues as well as the sector leadership and other stakeholders in the firm to define and develop the research service portfolio that will have highest impact on the success of the firm. As part of your role you will:

  • Analyse global developments in the sector and in specific markets, monitor client and competitor activity and provide regular briefings (written and in webinars/seminars)
  • Collaborate with other commercial research analysts, e.g., on cross-sector topics such as artificial intelligence to create products and services which may be relevant outside of your core sector.
  • Support research queries requiring specialist sector knowledge
  • Provide research input and advice for strategic sector activities like client events, training, external publications, pitches and other business development initiatives
  • Take responsibility for establishing a knowledge base for your sector
  • Assist in evaluating information resources required to support the sector knowledge needs of the business
  • Develop and deliver training related to industry knowledge and research tools

ABOUT YOU

Your experience and skill set includes:

  • About 2-4 years of experience of conducting research into one of these industries, ideally working within a professional services environment or similar fast-paced corporate environment 
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint. Familiarity with data visualisation tools like PowerBI would be beneficial
  • Excellent English language skills, both written and verbal; ideally working knowledge in a major European language
  • Experience of using major business informaton resources such as Orbis, MergerMarket and / or other major industry specific information resources. You will be generally proficient using the internet and finding publicly available information as well as the ability to conducting research in print resources

Strong research skills are vital for this role, which means you will be able to demonstrate the ability to:

  • Think critically and analytically
  • Undertake research methodically
  • Summarise and abstract what you read and synthesise multiple types of information that you find.
  • Draw conclusions and provide insight, whilst identifying the foundation and assumptions to those conclusions
  • Package and present your research findings in a structured way

In addition, you will be someone who is:

  • Self-aware – You take responsibility for your own self-development to ensure your knowledge and skills enable you to conduct your role to reflect best practice. You will have the aptitude and enthusiasm to learn new skills and to continuously improve who you are and your way of working
  • Interested in international affairs and the impact of these on the business and legal environment – You have a general awareness of economic, financial and general business concepts and you are generally intellectually curious with an investigative mind
