Our history
2019
DLA Piper UK is awarded Best Short-Term Insight Scheme in recognition of its undergraduate programme at The National Undergraduate Employability Awards.
The Acritas Stars 2019 analysis of outstanding lawyers includes 195 of our lawyers. The Stars programme was developed to provide a source of highly recommended lawyers based purely on client feedback, free from the influence of law firms.
2018
We’re awarded Best Gender Diversity Initiative by an International Law Firm at the Euromoney Europe Women in Business Law Awards.
We receive the Mansfield Certified Plus status recognising our efforts to increase diversity in the firm’s leadership.
2017
Working Mother magazine and Flex-Time Lawyers name us as one of the 50 best law firms for women’s business development and career advancement, for the fifth year in a row.
Acritas ranks DLA Piper as the second most favourable and recognised legal brand in the world.
We donate a total of nearly 200,000 pro bono hours across the world in 2017.
2016
For the ninth year in a row, we earn a perfect score from the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s Corporate Equality Index and we’re again rated a Best Place to Work for LGBT Equality.
For the fifth consecutive year, The Financial Times names us among the most innovative law firms in the world.
2015
Our wholly-owned subsidiary, Blue Edge Lab, launches CyberTrak, an innovative online cybersecurity tool featuring information on cybersecurity-related mandates and regulatory risk around the world.
We continue our expansion in Africa, North, Central and South America, and New Zealand.
2014
Our Leadership Alliance for Women (LAW) is named Best Gender Diversity Initiative by an International Firm, and Best Firm for Women in Business Law in Norway, Poland and Ukraine.
We’re awarded Best Mentoring Programme by an International Firm, and Best International Firm for Pro Bono Work at the Euromoney Australasian Women in Business Law Awards.
2013
We launch Break Into Law, a global initiative to remove barriers to careers within the legal profession for underrepresented young people.
We announce a groundbreaking three-year partnership with UNICEF, aimed at strengthening the protection of children around the world. We continue to support UNICEF, and we’ve contributed more than £1 million through fundraising and corporate donations, and provided pro bono support estimated at over £4 million.
2012
Supporting the 2012 Clinton Global Initiative Commitment to Action, we pledge to support legal education in East Africa and the DC Promise Neighbourhood initiative.
The American Lawyer names Senator George J. Mitchell (our Chairman Emeritus) a 2012 Lifetime Achiever, recognising his distinguished career in public service and private practice.
2011
We integrate with DLA Phillips Fox, a former Group Firm, and become the world’s largest law firm, the largest integrated Asia-Pacific legal practice and the largest global law firm presence in Australia.
Chambers & Partners honours us with its Award of Excellence for having the leading Real Estate practice in the US. We’re the only firm to have received this award twice.
2010
We win the Outstanding Achievement Award at the Legal Business Awards, recognising our “unrivalled impact on the business of law over the last two decades.”
We expand our partnerships and grow our footprint in Africa and South America.
2009
We join forces with Verizon Communications on a variety of pro bono work focusing on improving educational outcomes for children, supporting veterans and protecting domestic violence victims.
We partner with Pfizer on a pro bono initiative to provide low-income individuals with access to free legal assistance.
2008
Our Global Technology Leader Summit gives insights to the economic and cultural factors driving our industry. Shortly after, we launch our Global Technology Sector.
We expand our global presence with more offices opening in Europe, the Middle East and US.
2007
We become one of the first in the legal sector to launch a Global Sustainability Initiative, affirming our commitment to managing our environmental impact.
Our Leadership Alliance for Women (LAW) launches in the US to focus on developing and promoting our women lawyers, and maximising their opportunities for business generation and leadership.
2006
DLA Piper becomes our official name.
We continue our growth in Africa, the Middle East and Scandinavia.
2005
We announce New Perimeter, the first-of-its-kind international pro bono initiative, committing 13,000 hours in the first years to social causes.
We became one of the biggest business law firms in the world through the largest merger in the history of the legal profession.
