What have you learned from your experiences at DLA Piper?

The value of teamwork, and the vital role that everyone plays in getting excellent results. Whether I'm working with international offices or helping organise an event with one of our D&I committees, everyone can play a vital part in the work. I have always been encouraged to speak up and have a voice in whatever team I've been in, which leads to better outcomes.

What do you think makes DLA Piper different to other law firms?

The work we do is truly global. On any one day I might be working for clients in London, Sydney, Singapore or Milan, and I have had the chance to build connections with lawyers at my level across the firm. We are able to create a seamless international team at a moment's notice and draw on a vast pool of experience. This sometimes means scary but rewarding moments where a much more senior lawyer in another jurisdiction wants to hear your view on New Zealand law.

How does the firm support professional development and career growth?

There is a lot of formal training throughout the year and I find this is really useful to learn the things that they don't teach you in law school. I love hearing war stories, and how to avoid them when you end up in court. The firm also arranges international sector trainings, which mean I am always aware of cutting-edge legal issues, whether it's cyber-insurance, judicial review in the UK, or greenwashing litigation across the globe. Our open plan offices and collaborative working style also help so much as a junior lawyer. There are so many soft skills which you can pick up by hearing how a partner handles a phone call or having a conversation while you're making your morning coffee.
