Why did you choose to work at DLA Piper?

Throughout my years in law school, each year I completed internships at various law firms. During the summer between my third and fourth year, I chose to complete my internship at DLA Piper. During this internship, I discovered an environment where I could learn from a wide range of diverse and complex projects.

What I appreciated most was the willingness of my colleagues to involve me in meaningful work and to explain the significance of each task I was assigned. I was consistently encouraged to express my opinions, build strong arguments, and engage in critical discussions. This experience gave me the confidence that I'd found the right firm to start my career.

The most significant factor in choosing DLA Piper was the scale of the projects and the mentors I had the privilege to work with.

What have you learned from your experiences at DLA Piper?

I've learned several lessons that have shaped my approach to legal work.

For example, I've learned the importance of conducting thorough research before drafting a legal opinion. A well-supported argument is built on legal principles and a comprehensive understanding of the context, case law, and regulatory framework. This has taught me the importance of diligence and precision, as even the smallest detail can influence the outcome of a case.

I've learned how crucial it is to fully understand the client’s issue before providing legal advice. Taking the time to analyse the client's needs ensures that solutions are both accurate and practical.

Do you have any advice for students aspiring to pursue a career in law?

Approach the journey with curiosity, dedication, and a willingness to explore different experiences. Law is a demanding field, but the more exposure you have, the better you'll understand whether it truly aligns with your interests and strengths.

Pursue internships in various legal roles, not just in law firms. Exploring professions such as judiciary internships, public administration, or working with notaries and legal advisors provides a broader understanding of the legal system and helps you decide which path aligns best with your skills and interests. Experiencing different legal environments will give you insights into the many career options available within the legal field.

For those committed to a career as a lawyer, it’s essential to experience different law firms. Every firm has its own working style, culture, and approach to legal matters. By interning at multiple firms, you can better understand where you fit best and what kind of team and work environment will allow you to thrive.

Beyond that, mastering research skills, understanding the client’s perspective, and learning how to manage time effectively are essential skills for success. A well-rounded legal education comes not only from theory but also from practical experiences that refine your ability to analyse, argue, and solve complex legal issues.
